ARTIST LISTING

José Bedia

Cuban artist, Jose Bedia focuses on the Amerindian and Afro-Cuban cultures that practice the religions of Palo Monte and Santería or a ritual form of communication with the spirit world in search of man’s relationship to nature and animals. Having lived in Cuba and Mexico and on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, Bedia seeks to represent the shamanistic meaning of nahuales, a term that provides each person with an animal counterpart to act as a spiritual guide for knowledge or advice. By inciting an animal deity to possess the individual, the believer seeks guidance from the anima(s) of the spirit world.
